Sri Lankan athletes Srimali Samarakoon and Roshan Ranasinghe won silver medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games which is in progress in Samoa. Samarakoon won a silver medal in the Girls’ 48kg weightlifting event while Ranasinghe’s silver medal came in the Boy’s High Jump event. Samarakoon lifted 71kgs in clean and jerk and 54kgs in snatch in the event where K. Johns of the Wales lifted 72kgs in clean and jerk and 54kgs in snatch to win the gold medal. Ranasinghe cleared 2.11metres to win the silver in the Boy’s High Jump event which was won by India's Shanker Thajisvin who reached 2.14metres for the gold. Over 1000 athletes from 65 countries competing under nine different sports disciplines are taking part in the Commonwealth Youth Games.
