Chamdrika de Silva, a former national Women's Singles Badminton champion and a veteran of the game, won a silver and bronze medal at the World Senior Badminton Championship, held in Katowice, Poland.
Chandrika won a silver in the Over-40 Women's Singles event, after losing to Germany's Claudia Vogelgsang, and won her second medal in the same age category later on.
She paired up with her Singles final rival, Vogelgsang in the Women's Doubles but had to settle for a bronze medal, to place Sri Lanka at 23rd and 29 participating countries.
Apparently Chandrika's two medals were the only feat Sri Lanka enjoyed.
"I am grateful and extremely happy about this win. I competed in the Over-40 age category and I’m proud of being able to put Sri Lanka on the map at this World Championship. I am thankful to Seylan Bank for encouraging and permitting me to participate in tournaments such as this allowing me to follow my passion for Badminton," Chandrika said of her achievement.
Employed at Seylan Bank, Chandrika, is also known as the champion of Sri Lankan women’s badminton for over a decade.
She is a 11-time national Women's Singles champion and a 12-time national Women's Doubles champion with over 20 years of experience.
