Boxing: Dian Gomes recognised with award for contribution to sport

Boxing promoter Dian Gomes was recently felicitated at the Sports Management and Leadership Awards 2014, recognising sports achievements across Africa and Asia.   Dian   He was recognised for Outstanding Individual Contribution to Sports in boxing.   These awards applauds achievers across Africa and Asia in numerous categories, aimed at showcasing achievers and leaders who have demonstrated leadership capabilities in creating business opportunities and promoting sports by which growth and development has occurred. The conferment took place in Mauritius at the Le Meridien Resort.   Managing Director of MAS Intimates, Dian Gomes is also well known as the catalyst for the resurgence of boxing in Sri Lanka. A Junior National Flyweight Champion, Dian has been active in boxing administration for over 15 years.   He introduced corporate thinking into a long term plan for the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and is a sought after advisor for sports policy both in Sri Lanka and internationally.   Today, he focuses more on positioning Sri Lanka in the global boxing arena.   He was appointed to the Women’s Commission of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) for the period 2014 to 2018 at the AIBA Congress in November.   He is the first Sri Lankan to be appointed to this important Commission within the AIBA promoting women’s boxing across the world.   He is also the only Sri Lanka to be part of various AIBA working commissions since 2008.   He served as the Secretary of the Marketing Commission (2008 -2009), member of the Finance Commission (2010 -2011), member of the Athletes and Youth Commission (2013-2014), and is also a member of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Athletes and Youth Commission since 2010.
