Carrom: Western Province slicers emerge national champs with 6 Golds

The curtain came down on the 42nd National Carrom Championships conducted by the Carrom federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), with Western Province (WP) emerging overall champions winning 6 Gold Medals, at the Sports Ministry. 

Events at this year’s edition were Men’s and Women’s Singles. Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Men’s and Women’s Team events, which had 87 Slicers representing 9 Provinces. 

NorthWestern Province (NWP) were Runner-up with two Silver and two Bronze, while Sabaragamuwa with one Silver and one Bronze finishing third. 

Chamil Cooray and Chalani Lakmali Liyanage were adjudged 'Best Players' for Men and Women respectively. 

Y.M.P. Udayanga of NWP who made the only 'White Slam' of the tournament, won a special award from CFSL President, Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe.

Men’s Singles - Gold: Chamil Cooray (WP) 25-7, 25-0; Silver: K. Amila de Soyza (SP); Bronze: Y.M.P. Udayanga (NWP) 13-25, 25-20, 20-16 

Women’s Singles - Gold: Chalani Lakmali Liyanage (WP) 25-/10, 25-14; Silver: Yasika Rahabadda (Sabaragamuwa); Bronze: Gayani Ranasinghe (CP) 23-5, 25-15 

Men’s Doubles - Gold: Nishantha Fernando-Mohamed Shaheed (WP) 25-0, 25-12; Silver: D.N. Wijayasinghe-Disuru Dilmith Jayasiri (NWP); Bronze: A.N.M. Ameer-S.A.S. Senadi (CP) 25-9, 25-7 

Women’s Doubles - Gold: Joseph Roshita-Detuni Nomaya (WP) 25-1, 25-9; Silver: M.Z. Mohamed-M.H.B. Chaturika (NWP); Bronze: Madusha Dulanjali Vithana-Maduwanthi Gunadasa (Sabaragamuwa) 25-18, 12-25, 25-3) 

Team Events Men’s - Gold: WP (Chamil Darshana Cooray, Nishantha Fernando, Mohomed Shaheed Hilmy, Brindley Wickremasinghe and Mohamed Sherifdeen; Silver: Uva Province (Anas Ahamed, S.M. Shyamdeen, Nuwan Ravindrashan, Mohomed Irshad and K. Gopishan 
Bronze: NWP (Y.M.P. Udayanga, D.N. Wijayasinghe, Disuru Dilmith Jayasiri, H.M.A. Priyasanka and H.M.S. Madusanka)
