Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal is doubtful for the second Test match against England which will be played in Pallekele from November 14, following a groin injury sustained during the first Test played in Galle.
If Chandimal fails to retain fitness, stand in skipper Suranga Lakmal is likely to lead the Sri Lanka side in the second Test, according to team sources.
"Chandimal's injury is slightly a serious one. To fully recover he will need at least 10 to 14 days of rest. That would make him doubtful for the second Test," Sri Lanka Coach Chandika Hathurusingha told reporters following the first Test defeat in Galle.
"If he is not 100% fit we will not play Chandimal in the second Test. We may have to name a replacement," he added.
This makes Sri Lanka less two senior players for the second Test, following ace spinner Rangana Herath's retirement after the Galle Test.
England currently lead the three-match Test series 1-0 with the 211-run victory at Galle.
The home team would further be handicapped minus two senior contenders at Pallekele, as England aim a Test series win in Sri Lanka.
"We have introduced Akila Dananjaya into Tests. We also have Malinda Pushpakumara, who has over 600 First Class wickets to his name. Malinda would be an ideal replacement for Rangana and I'm certain he would deliver the goods for Sri Lanka as Rangana did," Hathurusingha staed.
According to team sources, Chandimal is likely to be replaced by middle-order batsman Roshen Silva for the second Test.
