Colombo FC, the champions of The Cargills FoodCity FA Cup 2014 and Dialog Champions League 2015, will take on Mohun Bagan, the Indian championship winner, in the opening match of the AFC Cup 2017 Preliminary Round at the Racecourse ground in Colombo today (31).
Colombo FC was selected to participate in the AFC Cup International Competition, which is organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), after its achievements at domestic level.
This is the first occasion that any club from Sri Lanka has qualified to compete at this level.
The first leg of the match will be played on January 31 at Race Course International Stadium Colombo at 3.30 pm, while the second leg will be played in India on February 7, at Kolkata with India’s champion Mohun Bagan FC.
Mohun Bagan FC is one of the oldest and leading football clubs of India which was established in 1989.
In the club history they have claimed many of victories at the top level local tournaments.
Colombo FC established in 2008 is currently one of the strongest football clubs in Sri Lanka.
They also have been very consistent in their teams’ performances while winning many locally conducted tournaments.
A total of 30 Football Clubs from 30 Asian countries who have become the champions of their top level local tournament will take part in to AFC Cup International Competition.
