The Royal Turf Club (RTC) announced that it had decided to postpone two of its scheduled racedays due to the weather conditions currently prevailing in Nuwara Eliya.
"This is to inform our racing patrons that the RTC officials held a meeting with the Trainers on the August 29 regarding the race meeting scheduled for the September 10 and 17 due to the unforeseen heavy rain that the racecourse in Nuwara Eliya has been receiving. Once again the RTC has been compelled to cancel its scheduled race day, which was to be held on September 10. However the race day on September 17 will go ahead as scheduled," the RTC issuing an official media release, stated.
"These unforeseen weather changes are causing us much grief and the trainers great concern that they would not be able to have their horses in peak condition to run on September 10 as the track had been closed for gallops as a safety measure. This reduces the fitness of the horses.” said CEO, RTC, Wayne Wood.
Wood went on to say that, “the race dates are scheduled six or more months in advance as we have race meetings scheduled until May 13 next year.”
Keeping the welfare of the horses as their paramount concern the RTC officials have decided to cancel the September 19 race day but hope to go ahead with the races on September 17.
"Seven races are programmed for the meeting on September 17, which will be designated as a 'Ladies Day'. Just under Rs 2 million in prize money will be distributed. The feature race will be the Class 1 Handicap over 1600M and entries will close at 10.00am on September 12. As always spectators are assured of a weekend of fun up in little England, complete with gala fashion shows, musical shows, children’s entertainment, good food, and of course, horseracing at the highest level," Wood further elaborated.
