ICC U-19 WC: Sri Lanka record second win beating Afghanistan by 33 runs

With an allround performance by skipper Charith Asalanka helped Sri Lanka recorded a 33-run win against Afghanistan in their second group stage game of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup match played at the Sylhet International Stadium in Bangladesh today (30).

Electing to bat, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 184 with 11 deliveries remaining while Afghanistan were skittled out for 151 runs with 31 deliveries to spare. 

Sri Lanka Under-19s skipper Asalanka top scored with 71 runs off 91 deliveries inclusive of eight fours and a six and returned to capture two wickets. 

Opener Avishka Fernando made 30 off 27 deliveries with four boundaries and six while Kaveen Bandara (20 and Wanindu Hasaranga (20) contributed with useful knocks. 

 Shamsurrahman captured three Sri Lankan wickets while Zahir Khan and Karim Janat claimed two wickets each. 

Afghanistan couldn’t make much headway in their run chase as they lost wickets at regular intervals as low-order batsman Waheedullah Safaq top scored with a run-a-ball 47 which included four boundaries and three sixes. 

Opener Karim Janat made 40 after facing 103 balls as skipper Ihsanullah faced 35 deliveries for his knock of 21. 

Kamindu Mendis took three wickets as Asalanka and Damitha Dilva claimed two wickets each. 

Asitha Fernando, Thilan Nimesh and Wanindu Hasaranga took a wicket each. 

Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan in a Group ‘B’ match on Wednesday (February 3) in Mirpur.
