The Election Commission established to conduct the long-overdue Annual General Meeting of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) has observed ‘some’ confusion with regard to the voting rights of the Athletes Commission and are likely to rule them ineligible to vote on February 23.
The commission headed by Dr. R.M.K. Ratnayake had made this observation when the commission met yesterday to review on the objections received by the contesting parties.
The commission also includes S. Wirithamulla and S. Liyanagama, two former Secretaries of the Ministry of Sports.
“There were some confusions,” Dr. Ratnayake said.
“When you look at the Sports Law there’s no provision for them to vote but we need to study it further and give a final verdict. ”
The final decision is expected to be announced on Monday (19).
There were also objections with regard to voting members from Badminton and Hockey Associations, but they have been rejected.
The formation of the Athletes’ Commission was a constitutional requirement and there are provisions in the newly adopted NOC constitution to include two members from the Athletes’ Commission to the Executive Committee of the NOC.
The Athletes’ Commission also has two vital votes from 33 of the total voting members, but if they are rejected the numbers will go down to 31.
