Rain and a late collapse significantly shifted the momentum, allowing Sri Lanka to regain control on Day 2 of the Test match in Galle. Despite substantial contributions from Mushfiqur Rahim (163), Najmul Hossain Shanto (148), and Litton Das (90), who were instrumental in Bangladesh reaching 484 for 9 by stumps, the latter part of the day proved pivotal.
Following a two-hour rain interruption, Sri Lanka capitalized on the changed conditions, securing five wickets for just 61 runs in 20.4 overs during the final session. This led to a dramatic collapse for Bangladesh, who had previously established two formidable partnerships. Milan Rathnayake (3 for 38) emerged as a key bowler, effectively exploiting the increased moisture in the pitch to dismantle the lower order.
Similarly, Asitha Fernando (3 for 80) played a crucial role by breaking both of Bangladesh's major stands. Debutant Tharindu Rathnayake also contributed to the breakthrough by inducing an ill-judged shot from Litton Das.
This turn of events marked a significant reversal of fortunes for Sri Lanka, especially after Bangladesh had dominated play for the majority of the day.
