Rugby: 'Patron Saint' of Kandy Sports Club -- Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte

Sport

Next Wednesday (25), It will be a year since the demise of Dr Sarath Kapuwatte, and the Rugby lovers of Kandy will surely miss him, as he is fondly remembered at every match played at Nittawela.

He was not only the former President, Patron and Trustee of Kandy Sports Club (KSC), but also a public figure of high esteem, particularly in Rugby when he revived the game at KSC in 1992, to be champions since then, except in 2014 (Navy) and 2015 (Havelocks).

He died at the age of 76, after serving KSC for over 26 years as President, the longest anyone has held this post.

He was a through gentleman with great qualities of honesty, integrity and enterprise to steer KSC to its pinnacle, until now, where there is a decline in financial services and discipline, other than in Rugby which is handled by a separate Rugby Committee.

Dr Kapu, as he was popularly known, joined the KSC administration in 1989, along with his friend Dr S. Jayakuru, and rose to be President, proposed by another friend Dr D.M. Makuloluwa, who was the President in 1992.

This was the year he became President for the first time and KSC won its first trophy that year.

He was the man who made good things happen at Nittawella.

From the day he took over, Dr Kapuwatte did many development activities to make KSC a champion club, which was his dream that came true, when they won the Clifford Cup for the first time in 1992 in the Inter-Club Knockouts.

They first won the League title in 1994.

Born in Matale, Dr Kapu schooled at S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavania, where he excelled in Boxing and later took part in sports at Medical College.

It was after coming to Kandy he got involved with KSC and changed the outlook of the Nittawela Club and made drastic changes with the support of the able committee who knew what Rugby was, and were well recognised individuals.

At the time of his death, he was the Patron of KSC. He was also one-time President of the Central Province Rugby Football Union and also the President of the Kandy District Table Tennis Association.

Kandy SC has lost a good committee member with a rich background in administration, who got the best from the committee and members.

When the history of KSC is recorded, the name of Dr. Kapuwattte should stand as one of the top administrators the club had produced, although his style of leadership was different to others.

Dr. Kapu is no more, but his memories remain forever in the minds of all those who knew his qualities.
