Ten students from Sri Lanka will participate in this year’s World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC), to be held from Saturday (31) to Monday (Nov 2) in Perth, Australia. This is the 10th WYSC with youth from all over the world taking part in an exciting battle over minds, words and letters. Migara Jayasinghe (Lyceum (LIS) Wattala), Janidu Karunaratne (LIS Wattala), Thavalakshman Yoganathan (LIS Wattala), Hasindu Arumapperuma (Royal), Aabid Ismail (Royal), Janul de Silva (Royal), Mukkesh Selvaraj (Stafford), Vignesh Pirapaharan (S. Thomas’), Radinka Dissanayake (Bishops) and Thirandi de Silva (Ladies) will represent Sri Lanka at this tournament. All the representatives have played in at least one previous WYSC event while Migara will be making his sixth consecutive appearance. He has won the awards for the best Under-12 player in 2010 and best Under-14 player in 2012 at the WYSC. At previous championships the Sri Lankan team has performed strongly and emerged as the third best country at the 9th WYSC held in Colombo in 2014. Yeshan Jayasuriya (S. Thomas’) was placed fourth and fifth in 2011 and 2012 respectively while Premakumar Nimalan (Royal) and Yasiru Fernando (Royal) were placed fifth and sixth in 2011 and 2012. Gayanath Chandrasena (D.S. Senanayake) and Viggnah Selvaraj (Stafford) were placed sixth and tenth respectively in 2014.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has interdicted Colombo Fort Magistrate Kosala Senadheera.
The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
The deadline for online applications to the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has been extended until July 12, the Department of Examinations said.
