South paw opener Upul Tharanga was named as the captain by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Selection Committee for the upcoming 5-match ODI Series against South Africa.
Tharanga's appointment comes in after skipper Angelo Mathews returned to the country owing an injury which he sustained during the second T20 against South Africa.
In addition Mathews has officially requested time off to be with his family from the SLC.
In addition to Mathews Nuwan Pradeep and Dhanushka Gunathilaka have returned to Sri Lanka on Tuesday (24) due to injuries.
As replacement for the injured trio the SLC Selection Committee has named Sandun Weerakkody, Lahiru Madushanka and Chathuranga de Silva.
The ODI matches against South Africa has been schedule as follows: January 28 at Port Elizabeth, February 1 at Durban, February 4 at Johannesburg, February 7 at Cape Town and February 10 at Centurion.
