SL in NZ: Record-breaking Elliot and Ronchi secure easy win for hosts in 5th ODI

Sport

Two powerful tons from Grant Elliot and Luke Ronchi and a record-breaking partnership helped secure New Zealand an easy 108-run win against Sri Lanka in the 5th ODI played at Dunedin today (23).   Put into bat first New Zealand amassed 360 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and in return Sri Lanka were bowled out for 252 runs with 39 deliveries to spare.   New Zealand were badly placed at 93-5 in the 20th over until Elliot and Ronchi paired up to frustrate the Sri Lankans with an unbroken and record breaking partnership of 267 runs for the sixth wicket.   This partnership comes as the second best for any wicket recorded by New Zealand.   Elliot smashed 104 not out off just 96 deliveries hitting seven fours and two sixes but the real star of the day was Ronchi.   Ronchi clobbered an unbeaten 170 off 99 deliveries, his first ODI ton, which included 14 fours and nine sixes as the visitors ran out of bowling tactics.   Both Roanchi and Elliot were named plays of the match as New Zealand took the lead of the series 3-1 after an abandoned match.   Lahiru Thirimanne and Nuwan Kulasekara picked two wickets each.   Sri Lanka had an excellent opening stand after Thirimanne and TM Dilshan put on 93 runs but they lost wickets at regular intervals.   Thirimanne made 45 off 65 balls with three fours and a six but Dilshan kept fighting with as others lost their composure.   Dilshan made 116 off 106 deliveries inclusive of 17 fours and a six.   Trent Boult picked four wickets while Tim Southee, Grant Elliot and Mitchell McClenaghan took two wickets each.   The sixth ODI will be played at Dunedin on Sunday (25).   New Zealand 360 for 5 wickets (50) (Brendon McCullum 25, Kane Williamson 26, Ross Taylor 20, Grant Elliot 104n.o, Luke Ronchi 170n.o, Lahiru Thirimanne 2/36, Nuwan Kulasekara 2/71)   Sri Lanka 252 all out (43.3) (Lahiru Thirimanne 45, TM Dilshan 116, Mahela Jayawardene 30, Jeevan Mendis 18, Trent Boult 4/44, Tim Southee 2/42, Grant Elliot 2/42, Mitchell McClenaghan 2/56)
