SLC seeks security reassessment in Pakistan ahead of upcoming tour

Sport

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has sought a security reassessment in Pakistan, after it had received a warning from the Prime Minister's office on a possible "terrorist threat on the Sri Lankan team".

Issuing a statement, SLC said that the Prime Minister's office had received "reliable information" of a possible the terrorist threat on the team while touring Pakistan.

The warning had been communicated through the Sports Ministry to the local cricketing body ahead of Sri Lanka's scheduled tour to Pakistan which is expected to begin on September 27.

Accordingly, SLC said it has been "advised to take extreme care, and ‘reassess’ the situation, before embarking on the said tour".

Sri Lanka is expected to play three ODIs and three T20 internationals in Lahore and Karachi-- a decade after the Sri Lankan team was ambushed by gunmen in 2009.

Several senior players including Lasith Malinga, Dimuth Karunaratne,  Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Thisara Perera have already pulled out of the tour.
