The marathon, cycling and race walking events of the 43rd National Sports Festival which was scheduled to be held on Saturday (27) and Sunday (28) has been postponed due to the prevailing inclement weather.
The events were scheduled to be held in Embilipitiya.
A decision regarding the staging of the events will be made next week as to where to stage the events after discussions with the Sports Minister.
Plans are underfoot to stage these events in the first and second week of June but the dates may change due to weather conditions.
All athletes and officials were in Embilipitiya but some could not be present as roads were blocked due to rains and flash floods.
Even the security personnel who were to be present at Embilipitiya for the Sports Festival, had to be directed elsewhere.
A sum of Rs. 25 Lakhs was also spent towards meals, accommodation and other expenses for the event.
