Chamila Karawita and Bandara Manike emerged victorious at the inaugural National Sumo Championship which was held at the YMCA Building in Colombo Fort on Wednesday (25).
Karawita, a well known sports journalist from Matugama, beat G.P. Udayanga from Gampola to win the Senior Men's Open Championship, thus becoming Sri Lanka's first national champion.
Manike, from Sri Lanka Air Force, too became part of history when she outsmarted her team mate Akila Kumari Wijewardena in the Senior Women's Open Championship final.
IN the Junior Category, U.D. Isuranga of Parakrama SC beat A.P. Perera of Armstrong SC to win the Boy's championship while H.M. Hemanthi defeated J. Seneviratne to win the Girls' title.
Over 150 athletes competed at the inaugural National Sumo Championship which was held under Senior and Junior categories.
