Swimming: Nine new record at 23rd International Schools Championship

Haren Nugawela of Wycherly International was the star of the first day as he established two new records at the 23rd Inter-International Schools' Swimming Championship 2017 commenced on Saturday (4) at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex. 

A total of nine new records were established on the opening day.
 
Haren who won the boys 16 and over 100m backstroke with a record time of 1:00.39mts, clocked 53.15secs in the boys 16 and over 100m freestyle. 

In an event organised by the Asian International School with Milo, Glitz and Morison's Lacto as sponsors 860 athletes from 19 international schools took to the blue waters in exhibiting their prowess. 

A total of 57 events were worked off on Saturday where Lyceum Wattala timed the best to occupy the first spot in thirteen events while their athletes finished in 2nd and 3rd in 22 events. 

The interesting feature of the day was the first three swimmers in the boys 16 and over freestyle event including Haren Nugawela improved the existing record established by Kavin Weerasinghe. 

The record established last year was stood at 55.22secs. 

New meet records: 

  • Thenushi Kalavitigoda (Regent) - Girls 9 and Under (3:20.12mts) 
  • Arukshan Pavalachandran (Wycherly)-Boys 14-15 200m IM Group 2 (2:20.75mts) 
  • Limandee Hettiarachchi (Lyceum Nugegoda)-Girls 9 and Under 50m Breaststroke Gr.5 (46.35sec) 
  • Diluk Jayatilleke (Lyceum Wattala)- Boys 16 and over 50m Breaststroke Gr.1 (31.74secs) 
  • Hiruki De Silva (Gateway Colombo)-Girls 12-13 100m Backstroke Gr. 3 (1:19.55mts) 
  • Haren Nugawela (Wycherley)-Boys 16 and Over 100m Backstroke Gr.1 (1:00.39mts) 
  • Tevindee Methlini (Lyceum Wattala)-Girls 10-11 100m Freestyle Gr. 4 (1:09.59mts) 
  • Stephen Perera (Gateway Colombo)-Boys 16 and Over 100m Freestyle Gr. 1 (54.87secs) 
  • Haren Nugawela (Wycherley)-Boys 16 and Over 100m Freestyle Gr. 1 (53.15secs)
