Table Tennis: South Asia Junior and Cadet Championship begins

The South Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championship 2017 begins from today (19) at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Stadium in Mt. Lavinia.

This competition is organised Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) and will run until Sunday (21).

This is the first time in the country's history that Sri Lanka is playing host to an international Table Tennis event. 

The South Asian Table Tennis Federation (SATTF) has conferred upon Sri Lanka to host this prestigious event, and the Ministry of Sports has approved the championships.

All South Asian Countries will be represented by teams of 14 players and an official each who will be fully supported by the respective Table Tennis Associations. 

"The main objective of this tournament is to enhance soft skills such as communication skills, problem solving skills, team work dynamics, entrepreneurship skills and leadership skills of Table Tennis players in Sri Lanka, to promote table tennis among all schools in Sri Lanka and improve the popularity for the game, to provide a national level platform-this provides opportunity to both junior and senior level players to show their talent, to provide Table Tennis equipment such as rackets, quality balls, tables and etc. for the schools in order to develop the game by making it popular among the internal students in Sri Lanka and provide them a better platform to develop themselves as a top quality Table Tennis players," the TTASL stated.

Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Nepal will be the countries taking part in the three-day competition which will have events under Team, Singles and Doubles for boys and girls in Under-18 and Under-15 age categories.

Under-15 Girls: D.H. Kolambage (Prajapathi BV, Ambalangoda / Captain), Jithara Warnakulasuriya (Ladies’ College), Sanduni Prabuddhika (Prajapathi BV, Ambalangoda)

Under-15 Boys: Chandupa Alahakoon (Kingswood College / Captain), Thisas Ranchagoda (Royal College), Dewmith Weerasena (Lyceum International, Nugegoda)

Under-18 Girls: Hansani Piumila (Visakha Vidyalaya / Captain), Imasha de Silva (Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda), Thanushi Rodrigo (Mahamaya GS, Kandy), Chamathsara Fernando (Visakha Vidyalaya)

Under-18 Boys: Dinesh Kawishka (Vidyartha College / Captain), Dishanka Thennakoon (Dharmaraja College), Virunaka Hendahewa (Royal College), Nimesh Ranchagoda (Royal College)
