Tennis: MAS Holdings win Mercantile Tournament 2017

MAS Holdings took grip of the Mercantile Tennis Tournament 2017, winning the annual event with an overwhelming total of 142 points. 

The tournament, the last of Sri Lanka Tennis Association's (SLTA) annual calendar, was held at the Greenpath courts over eight days from December 3 to 10. 

Overall winners MAS Holdings were clear winners of the competition having obtained 142 points against the total of 38, gained by second placed Althico. 

The clear deficit of 104 points makes them the comfortable winners of this year's edition of the tournament. 

MAS gained 30 points in the Women's Singles and 25 points each in Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles and a further 18 points in Over-35 Singles. 

They claimed 15 points from the Women's Doubles and 14 points off Men's Division III while earning six points and five points in Men's Division II and Division I segments respectively. 

They also claimed three points each in Over-45 Singles and Over-35 Doubles. 

Althico, in the meantime, earned 25 points from the Men's Doubles and 10 points off Men's Division I and three from Men's Division II. 

The overall third place went to Livinro, who obtained 31 points in total from Over-35 Doubles (12), Over-35 Singles (10) and Over-45 Singles (9). 

They edged out Pan Asia Bank by a point in overall standings. 

In addition to claiming the Overall Championship, MAS Holdings also won the Most Outstanding Team award for their performances as a unit. 

However they were able to claim wins in the Men's Division III and Mixed Doubles segments while the wins of other nine segments were divided among nine different teams. 

A total of 25 teams competed at the Mercantile Tennis Tournament as the SLTA competitions for 2017 came to a close.

Men’s Doubles: Artha Hewacottage (Contrinex Ceylon) and Ahamed Shakir (Althico) beat Arvind Fernando (HNB) and Guyanga Weerasekera (Jinasena) 

Women’s Singles: Renuka Wickramasinghe (Pan Asia Bank) beat Gayathri Fernando (Shore to Shore) 

Women’s Doubles: Renuka Wickramasinghe (Pan Asia Bank) and Gayathri Fernando (Shore to Shore) beat Thilini Leeniyagolla (MAS) and Sherene Wijesingha (MAS) 

Mixed Doubles: Mewan Gajadeera (MAS) and Thilini Leeniyagolla (MAS) beat Guyanga Weerasekera (Jinasena) and Renuka Wickramasinghe (Pan Asia Bank) and Sohan Patrick (MAS) and Sherene Wijesinghe (MAS) 

Over-35 Singles: Kushal Wijewickrama (Quebee Den) beat Gazzali Ghouse (Amana Bank) 

Over-35 Doubles: Niroshan Jayasundara (Livinro) and Danuka Karunananda (TD Sirisena) beat Neil de Rose (DFCC) and Waruna Chandrasiri (Delmage) 

Over-45 Singles: Niroshan Jayasundara (Livinro) beat Trinesh Fernando (Dialog) 

Over-45 Doubles: Gazali Ghouse (Amana Bank) and Irshard Othman (Amana Bank) beat Ari David (Siam City Cement) and Trinesh Fernando (Dialog)
