U-19 Hockey: Nalanda and Seetha Devi win Blue and Gold 7s

Nalanda College Colombo and Seethadevi Girls School Kandy won the Boys and Girls championships at the Singer Blue and Gold Hockey 7s held at the Royal College ground on Sunday (8).   Nalanda beat Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa by 2-1 in the Boys’ Cup final after both teams failed to score in the first half.   For Nalanda, Manura Hasintha and Chinthaka Akalanka scored the goals while Ravindu Sheran scored the solitary goal for Joseph Vaz.   Nalanda’s Jeewantha Pasan was named the Most Outstanding Player while Chamalka Rukshan of Joseph Vaz became the Best Goalkeeper.   The Girls’ Cup final was an easy game for Seethadevi GS, who beat Bishops’ College by 4-0.   The winners led 3-0 at halftime and goals were scored for the victors by Shehani Fernando and Tharaki Paranagama, who scored two goals each.   Shehani Fernando was awarded the Most Outstanding Player while Seethadevi GS skipper Sakunthala Illeperuma won the Best Goalkeeper's award.   In the Third Place Playoffs Royal College beat Dharmadutha College Badulla in the Boys’ segment while Musaeus College beat Ladies College in the Girls’ category.   Zahira College Matale won the Boys' Plate championship defeating Christ Church College 3-2 in a close battle while D.S. Senanayake College finished third defeating St. Thomas' College Matale 1-0.   Vijaya College Matale beat Zahira College Colombo 3-0 to win the Bowl championship.   Presidents’ Girls’ School Nawala beat Southland College Galle 2-0 to win the Girls' Plate championship while Visakha Vidyalaya won the Plate third place playoff beating Sirimavo Bandaranike Vidyalaya 1-0.   Christ Church College Matale beat St. Joseph's Girls School Nugegoda 1-0 to win the Bowl championship.   The tournament, held for the 14th occasion with the participation of 53 schools from all parts of the island, was organised by the Royal College Hockey Club.
