U-20 Rugby: Isipathana's Chamod Fernando wins top award

Hundreds of school rugby players were recognised last Thursday for their untiring efforts during the concluded school rugby season which resulted in taking their respective teams to the helm at the annual awards ceremony of the Singer Schools Rugby League Championship. 

The event took place at the Bishops' College Auditorium along with the inaugural Singer-Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017, where five top awards were presented. 

The cynosure of the evening was undoubtedly on the top three awards, where the Singer-Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017, which was claimed by the dynamics No.8 of Isipathana College, Chamod Fernando. 

The remaining two awards among the top were for the Best Try Scorer of the Year and Best Place Kicker of the Year, both picked after considering the performances of the 2017 School Rugby season. 

League champions Royal College, produced the Best Try Scorer with their No.8 Hamza Reeza claiming the award while Zahira College's energetic and versatile player, Zaid Sinhawansa, became the Best Place Kicker. 

In addition Aabid Cader and his team S. Thomas' College were awarded as the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 and the Most Popular Rugby Team of Year 2017 respectively. 

Royal College officially received their much awaited Singer League Championship trophy along with certificates and medals while runners-up Isipathana College were presented with their silverware. 

St. Anthony's College Katugastota were awards the Plate championship and while Dharmaraja College were awarded as runners-up. 

Ananda College emerged Bowl champions while Maliyadeva College Kurunegala became runners-up of the Singer League Division I tournament. 

The Shield Championship went to St. Aloysius College Galle and Nalanda College Colombo were the runners-up. 

The Division II Cup championship was won by St. Anne's College Kurunegala with Carey College emerging runners-up. 

The Plate championship of the segment went to Sri Rahula College Katugastota while Vidyaloka College Galle emerged runners-up.
