Volleyball: Mercantile Tournament 2016 from August

Sport

Reviving the tournament after a lapse five years in 2012, the Mercantile Volleyball Association (MVP) has made all plans afoot to stage the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament 2016 during August and September this year.

The MVP's main competition, the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament, is one of the key competitions of the island next to the national championships and draws a large team participation annually.

The large sum of prize money on offer, which exceeds One Million Rupees, is one of the reasons for this competition to become a popular outing among the mercantile sector annually.

Customarily the tournament draws over 100 teams and this year too MVP hopes to attract teams as expected.

To make this competition more viable, the MVP has already begun to register teams for this year's edition of the tournament and applications will be accepted until July 31.

"The key objective of MVP is to provide a meaningful avenue for mercantile employees to be free of mental fatigue, whereby their performance can be enhanced by participating in sports. Volleyball being a team sport it helps to build team spirit among the employees, thereby benefiting the organization they work for. The game also helps to unearth hidden sporting talents among the employees while helping them to improve their health," the MVP stated in its pre-event press release.

This year's tournament will be held in August and September.

The tournament is held under the accepted international rules and regulations and provides an opportunity for both males and females to participate.

The preliminary rounds will be held at the Maharagama Youth Services Court on August 20 and 21, before the finals which have been scheduled for September 16 and 17 at the Maharagama Youth Services Indoor Stadium.

"To qualify for participation, the players should have served in their respective companies for a minimum of two months. Meanwhile, new clubs can register until July 31," the MVP communiqué added.

The tournament will be held under three categories - Super League, Championship and Division 'A' with prize money for the winning teams exceeding One Million Rupees.

The best performer of the competition will receive a motor bicycle.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners-up and to the best player in male and female categories.
