Flight operations at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have come to an abrupt halt after an Air India flight to London crashed shortly after takeoff claiming the lives of 242 passengers and crew members.
The aircraft, operating as Flight AI 171 to London Gatwick, had gone down in a residential area just outside the airport perimeter.
There were 232 passengers and 10 crew members on board the ill-fated flight. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, and rescue operations are currently underway. Casualty figures have not yet been officially confirmed.
In a statement, the airport authority announced a complete suspension of all flights until further notice.
Air India states the nationality details of those on board as follows: 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese passengers.
The cause of the crash remains unclear.
