Six people who were accused and convicted of gang-raping and murdering the 23 year old medical student, who came to be known as Nirbhaya, were hanged on Friday (20) morning.
The four men were hanged at 5.30 am at Delhi's Tihar Jail, hours after the Supreme Court, in a midnight hearing, refused to grant them relief.
The crime took place on 16th December 2012, when the victim boarded a bus in New Delhi along with her male friend and was reportedly assaulted by a group of six people. The victim who was gang-raped was pronounced dead six weeks after the incident. Of the six accused, one was convicted by the Juvenile Justice Board and the other committed suicide in jail.
The remaining four accused were convicted by a Trial Court and was given the death sentence. The convictions and the death penalties were later upheld by the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
