The bodies of the rebels, all clad in military-style fatigues and with their serial numbers strung around their necks, were first brought to the Vavuniya Base hospital where a post mortem was carried out.

Among the dead were eight senior LTTE cadres from the “Charles Anthony” band, the military said.

The security forces also recovered three T.56 rifles, one Rocket Propeller Gun, 14 radio sets, four RPG rounds, several grenades, 1.5 kilograms of explosives and six T. 56 magazines.

Earlier an inquiry was held at the hospital by Vavuniya’s Acting Magistrate Murugesu Sittambalam.
