I am writing in the hope that someone with authority will read this letter and take action to stop the kind of nonsense I had to endure recently, when I visited Kanatte to pay my respects to a deceased relative. I went with the intention of lighting a candle and saying a few prayers for the soul of the departed.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, appeared four men, with mammoties in hand. They started to dig the ground around the grave and pull out grass and weeds. They then demanded money for services I had not even asked for.
Then there are the beggars who invade the cemetery. I saw a lady carrying food parcels, and the beggars practically snatched the parcels off her.
That is the kind of treatment meted out to people who come in peace to grieve and pray for loved ones.
I overheard someone say: “Me rate mokuth hariyata karanda bahe, ne” (in this country nothing can be done correctly).
What a shame.
