Parents and past pupils of the Ratgama Devapathiraja Vidyalaya, which was destroyed by the tsunami on December 26, 2004, say the State Engineering Corporation has failed in its duty to oversee the rebuilding of the school, and as a result the students and teachers are facing great hardship.

According to the concerned parents and past pupils, the Japan International Corporation System had allocated funds for installing a transformer on the school premises. However, the Ceylon Electricity Board has refused to supply electricity to the school, saying the building contractors have done a shoddy job of wiring the buildings, thus potentially endangering students and staff.
The renovated school re-opened its doors on May 5 this year to 2,300 students. However, three of the school buildings are without a roof, and the school has no electricity and no water supply.
