By Harry Jayachandra
The heavyweight clash between Isipatana and St. Peter’s to be played at Bambalapitiya on April 25 will kick start the inter school rugby league season. The league will begin on April 20 and end in mid June with the match between these two fierce rivals headlining the first week’s matches.

A school match in progress during the last inter-school rugby season

Master in Charge of rugby at Isipatana and Tournament Secretary for the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association (SLSRA) Gamini Sarathchandra speaking to The Sunday Times said; “This year the league tournament will consist of three groups with eight teams each as opposed to last year where we had nine. And the other significant change is that only the last team in each group will be demoted. The knockout tournament will commence on June 21 with the final scheduled to be played on July 4.

Isipatana led by stand off Niroshan Fernando have eleven seniors and will go in to the league tournament as favourites, while former champions St. Peter’s led by third year coloursman and centre Dilshan Paul have only three second year coloursmen in their ranks.

Following are the schools in each group;

Division I ‘A’; Kingswood, Isipatana, Royal, S. Thomas’ Trinity, St. Peter’s, Mahanama and St. Joseph’s.
Division 1 ‘B’; St. Anthony’s Kandy, Vidyartha, Dharmarajah, Wesley, Thurstan, Ananda, Zahira and Prince of Wales.

Division 1 ‘C’; St. Sylvester’s Kandy, Science College, C.W.W. Kannangara MMV, Royal Panadura, Lumbini, St, Benedict’s College, Nalanda College and D.S. Senanayake College.

Meanwhile at the SLSRA Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday, Principal of Isipatana K. Punyadasa retained his position as President with J.J. Amarajeewa who happens to be the principal of Lumbini being elected as the Deputy President. Kumar Rodrigo of Ananda will function as Secretary while the Treasurer will be A. K. P. Dodanwela of St. Sylvester’s.
