Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), is an associate company of the Royal Institute Group, and is devoted to academic excellence in tertiary education. The Institute's mission is to produce graduates, diplomates, and other higher qualification holders with international competence in academic knowledge, soft skills and positive attitudes.
A Degree from University of London
RIC conducts teaching for the BSc and LLB Degrees and Diplomas offered by the University of London and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The Institute also provides its own foundation and ancillary courses to prepare the students for undertaking Degree and Diploma studies. RIC opens up higher education opportunities to both Sri Lankan and overseas students in the fields of Accounting, Banking, Business, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Law, Management, Mathematics and, Sociology. With this opportunity, the Sri Lankan students can obtain a degree with international repute at a reasonable cost and without leaving home, as the distance is no longer a barrier to higher education.
The Institute which commenced undergraduate teaching in 1990 has so far produced over 1000 degree and diploma holders. At present there are over 800 students reading for the BSc and LLB, as well as Diplomas at the RIC. Most of the students are in the age group of 18-22 and, comprise of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities. They learn together at RIC in one international language - English. The Institute has maintained and certainly improved its excellent academic performance in the past with over 95 percent pass rate and an outstanding class rate every year. RIC graduates do not face unemployment problem as they are highly competitive in both national and international job markets. Outstanding students also secure placements for postgraduate education in both Sri Lankan and foreign universities every year.
RIC 10th Convocation Ceremony 2008
RIC held its 10th Convocation Ceremony in February 2008 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). Prof. Jonathan Kydd, Dean of the External Study, University of London, Mrs. Rosemary Gosling, Director, External Study, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Dr. David R.K. Brownrigg, CIS Course Director, Goldsmiths University of London, and Dr. Simon Askey, Deputy Director, External Laws Programme of the University of London were in attendance.
There were a total of 220 Graduates and Diplomates receiving their awards at this ceremony. There were 10 students receiving their degree with First Classes and awarded with Gold Medals. Moreover, 40 graduates with Second Upper Classes and 54 graduates with Second Lower Classes were awarded their degrees at the Convocation.
Four students received commendations for Splendid Academic Achievement, University of London 2007 Scholarships. The Worlds' Best results of the University of London in 2007 examination in specific subjects were obtained by 3 students who were the recipients of the Worlds' Best in LLB (Scheme B Final Year), Worlds' Best in Management Mathematics, and Worlds' Best in Software Engineering.
This time too, RIC strived to record an excellent standard in its academic achievements with an above average undergraduate students pass rate at the final examination.
