Doing the right thing does not mean that success would come overnight

Question: I commpleted my GCE Advanced Level examination last year (2008) in Commerce Stream-Sinhala Medium, and my results are 2A s for Economics,Accounting and 1B for Business Studies.Though I was intended to enter the University of Law Faculty with my results I feel uncertain about my inspirations now.Because my z-score is 1.5047 and my district rank is 246.

By the way I am following a CIMA course at the ABS Kandy.I am still at the foundation level and I have completed 3 subjects with the exams at that level.I will be finishing the foundation level at the end of March. I am also interested in doing a job to gain work experience till I get university entrance.I also want to know whether there are any scholarships for Sri Lankan students like us abroad with minimum cost or for free.

As my abbition is to become a Management Accountant and I am passionately trying to fulfill my inspiration, please guide me in the best possible way in my future.

Kandy Via Email - Dear Nisansala,

Answer: Most people fail not because of lack of ability or intelligence, but because lack of desire, direction, dedication and discipline.

Knowing what you want to be is a critical first step to success also this has to be balanced with competence and practicality.

I sense a certain degree of confusion in your question and therefore need to make some assumptions.
As I see it the option to do CIMA is a good one, where there are many students doing this due to the time delays in the university systems, where you can hop on and hop off as required. Your primary goal is to start at the bottom and take the initial phase as a learning process which will include a healthy balance between getting a qualification and experience.

You should be proud about the result and use this to gain intensity in your skill levels and make the right decision .You have two options to consider:

n You get university entrance, based on your objective you may want to go with Management and HR
n If you do not get what you want, then you can continue to finish your CIMA and apply to foreign universities , who would gladly accept you based on your results, but this is easier said than done.

I have many students who work for BPO's as back office support this can be a good start for you , where they also have flexi hours, in this way you balance off knowledge and skill.

Finally I feel the law option does not fit in with your career goal, so go ahead and focus on building intensity in your critical skill and that is management accounting.

Stay focused

Q: I want to pursue a masters degree in business management (MBA) preferably in a US university so what should I do initially to find a sponsorship deal from the university please give me a suitable advice. Further the part time job, will be enough to cover my all my expenditure incurred on my studies. Is there a age barrier for studies?
Thanks

Hi Dhayalan,
A: First you need to do your research on the web to identify and prioritize the universities based on three areas of search:
US MBA
Sponsorship
Internships available
Do your home work first ,based on your research I would fine tune the action plan of what ,where and how

Q:. Dear Sir,
Firstly I'd like to tell to you that it's a great thing that you are doing by helping people in the way you do. Well, I'm very confused at the moment. I grew up wanting to be a doctor, then I wanted to be a journalist, then an automotive engineer and now something in the business field. I've completed both my Cambridge OL and Edexcel AL in the science stream and I've completed one semester at ANC. But at this moment I have no clue what to pursue as a career as such. One thing I've always wanted to do is help people in any way that I can, but now I see that if I can't get a job I wont be able to do so. I love to talk to people, I can write really well and I want to have my own pharmaceutical company one day. So Sir as you can see, I'm extremely confused so I would be beyond grateful if you could help me with my problem. Thank you for taking the time to read this and my apologies if I have wasted your time.
Yours Truly.

An Extremely Confused Someone.

Dear Confused student,
A: I must tell you that looking at your question, I see three parties who have contributed to this problem;
First your parents for not guiding you on the correct path
Second your educational institution for not letting you discover yourself and
Third yourself for just practicing ,but not scoring
However having said this , every body at some moment of time want to be a Pilot, Doctor, Supermodel or even race car driver, but with time things get clearer, so to answer your question have the do and don't formula Do
Be Patient: Sometimes doing the right thing does not mean that success would happen overnight
Be Ambitious: You need to blend passion and purpose try to get the best out of ANC and focus on the business agenda
Prioritize: We are all faced with the same problem try to reduce your clutter and prioritize on getting your professional qualification Don't
Forget the past: You win some you loose some don't let this bother you may get to your objectives later than your colleagues, the achievement and the experience is the key
Settle for anything less : Getting the O/l results and getting the best at ANC is important in the long run. You have time on your side so go ahead and enjoy life
One of my dreams is to open up a specialty restaurant and be the head chef, sometimes you need to let go and go for the low hanging fruit first.
