AIS : Two decades of excellence

Asian International School is now in its 20th year. The school has 1200 to 1300 pupils and intends to stay at that figure so that classes remain at controlable numbers. New Buildings and new Sports areas merely enhance the existing facilities and give the AIS students roomier Libraries, larger Laboratories and more extensive Performing Arts areas.

The Examination results of 2007 and 2008 were among the best in the island and the school tries to provide a judicious blend of Sport, Academics and Extra Curricular Activities. Many Edexcel Board World Prizes were won by AIS students (see picture). OL students are encouraged to do a minimum of 8 subjects and a maximum of ten. Several gained all As in 8, 9 and 10 subjects (one student gained 11 As in 2008)

AIS counsels all its Advanced Level students about Universities and the advises them on the Institutions best suited to each student. AIS students are found in all the best Universities of the World and AIS pupils have gained scholarships and Aid packages from almost every country that they desire to study in. A few of the Universities round the globe where AIS children have won Placement, Scholarships or substantial Financial Aid are Columbia, Yale, Duke, Macalester, Berkeley, Williams, Boston Univ. UPenn, Cambridge, Warwick, Durham, Bristol, LSE, Imperial, McGill, Monash, Melbourne, Sydney, Univ of Manipal, Univ of Mumbai, National Univ of Singapore and others. Sanura Illaperuma of AIS was the first Sri Lankan student to be awarded a 100% scholarship by the Hong Kong Univ of Science and Technology.

Sports achievements are high on the list of AIS accomplishments. The School squad has been the winner of the Inter-International Swimming Competition for the last ten years. Just last month the school's new Swimming Complex was opened giving the students their own practice area.
AIS pupils also perform excellently well in activities outside the normal school curriculum.

Yanik Tissera has become an expert photographer and is now the official photographer for the Galle Book Festival 2009, Avinesh Nareshkumar was the Junior National Golf Champion and played in Manchester where he came 4th,, Sakina Esufally was the runner up in the Zonta "Young Women in Public Affairs" 2009. Students have come first in Quiz Contests. Digital Art Contests, Oratorical Contests, Band Contests and Dance Contests. Good dancers perform their Arengatrams and outstanding Swimmers like Mineka Karunaratne are named Sportswoman of the Year.

From 16 students to 1200 students in 20 years is an achievement to be proud of. In two decades AIS has become one of most respected and achievement oriented International Schools in the island. In addition, traditional Asian values are maintained and the school lives up to its name. Modernisation but not Westernisation is the ideal that had been followed.
