In the world of cricket we often come across all-rounder-players who can bat and bowl reasonably well. These are talented players who have the ability to score and also get wickets. All-rounders in cricket are quite rampant, however to find a cricketer who has the ability to contribute as a match winner either with the bat or with the ball is a rare sight.
In Josephian skipper Sameera Weerasinghe you have just that. Sameera is an exceptionally talented cricketer who has proved his all-round capabilities in the current school cricket season. As a right arm leg break bowler and as a right hand middle order batsman Sameera has single handedly steered the Josephians to victory.
He came up with a sterling all-round performance against the Thomians taking a match bag of 13 wickets for 55 runs and stroking a century to guide the Joes to victory after ten years. Earlier against Isipathana, a cracking half century paved the way for another victory for the Joes.
At present the Josephian skipper has accumulated over 750 runs inclusive of three centuries and three half centuries and has captured over 70 wickets with his leg breaks. Playing in his 5th year for the first eleven team, Sameera has the distinction of taking over fifty wickets consecutively in the last two years for the Darley Road School. Although he may not achieve the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets for the season, young Sameera is determined to get close to both those landmarks. Beginning his career when he was just nine years, Sameera has the distinction of captaining St Josephs in the Under 13, 15, 17, Second Eleven and the first eleven teams.
The young Josephian represented Moors SC in the Premier League and Under 23 tournaments which concluded recently. A talented all rounder who has proved his capabilities with both bat and ball young Sameera Weerasinghe is bound to make it to the big league sooner rather than later. |
