The use of bright and striking colours is predominant in his paintings... and this is to heal the minds of human beings whose lives are marked with violence, fear, bloodshed and sorrow due to the prevailing social conditions, says well-known artist S.H. Sarath, amidst preparations for his upcoming solo exhibition titled ‘Life’.
The exhibition featuring about 55 paintings by Sarath on various themes such as life, love, environment, religion and mediation will be held on March 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 at No 18 A, Sarasavi Udyanaya, Nawala Road, Nugegoda from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m..
“Given the tension created in the general public as a result of the disturbing situation, it is important that people get exposure to sources which offer them comfort and relief as much as possible. Art, in that sense appeals to the senses and can give people pleasure and inner satisfaction,” Sarath says.
In European countries, galleries are crowded but here it is not so, he laments.
In addition to his oil paintings, Sarath is also exhibiting about 100 black and white sketches.
Sarath’s style ranges from traditional to cubism. To give traditional art a modern twist is what he attempts, “Most of these paintings belong to the Kandyan period; but I try to deviate from the traditional and give it a modern outlook,” he says.
Having held about 60 solo exhibitions so far including 18 solo shows across the world in countries such as Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland and Germany, Sarath’s work was exhibited at a United Nations exhibition in July/August last year.
