CWW Kannangara MMV bounced back from 47 points to nil bashing at the hands of CH and FC to force a 14 all draw with by their comparison the Goliath in Galle RFC. But missed out on a pre-quarter final berth since Galle managed a try against CH and FC.
The Coach of the school Asela Deshapriya speaking to The Sunday Times said; “We have the Western Province Schools Sevens tournament coming this weekend. Thus the primary objective of our taking part in this tournament is to identify flaws in our game and take remedial action before we face Colombo’s best schools. We really want to do well in the schools tournament and since we have not had rugby for
awhile, this tournament gave us an ideal opportunity to get our act together.”
Other relative new comers did not fare that well. Ehaliyagoda has already been eliminated following a defeat to pre tournament favourites Kandy by 42 points to nil and a 19 to 17 loss to Kurunegala. Navy thumped Old Nalandians by 57 points to nil, while Havelocks thrashed Gampaha by 46 points to nil and Matale managed just a penalty while letting Police score 45 points. CR and FC, who are expected to challenge Kandy for the title, had an easy outing. They ran in 54 points past a hapless Diyatalawa side.
The Pre-quarter Finals for the Cup Championship begins at 9am today and is as follows; Kandy SC – Galle RFC, CH and FC ‘A’ – Kurunegala RFC, Navy – CH and FC ‘B’, Air Force ‘A’ – Seethawaka, Army – Old Wesley SC, Police – Panadura, Havelocks – Petersons and CR and FC – Old Zahira SC.
