The Sri Lanka America Association of Southern California (SLAASC) celebrated the Sinhala Aluth Avuruddha and Hindu Puththandu at Woodley Park, in Van Nuys, California on Saturday April 11.
The SLAASC has been celebrating this traditional event annually for the past thirty six years and this year’s event had the biggest gathering ever with the participation of more than 1,000 Sri Lankans and Americans.
The founder president of the SLAASC, Jayam Ratnam and the Sri Lankan Consul General, Ananda Wickremasinghe addressed the gathering and called on the participants to pray for peace in Sri Lanka.
Traditional food items such as kiribath, kavum, kokis and food items like dosai and vadai from the north and east were served at the event.
Ananda Markalanda, the cultural secretary conducted many traditional Sri Lankan games such as tug of war, ‘Avurudhu Kumari and Kumaraya’ contests.
Traditional dances such as bharatha natyam and upcountry and low country dance items too were performed. |
