Tissa: A great story ends

Veteran film personality Tissa Abeysekara passed away at 5.45 p.m. at the National Hospital in Colombo yesterday.

He was admitted to the cardiology unit of the hospital and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on April 11 where he underwent surgery, hospital sources said.

Mr. Abeysekara was a versatile film director, writer, actor and a film critic. He had won many awards throughout his illustrious career as a bilingual intellectual.

One of his earliest contributions to local cinema was writing the script for Dr. Lester James Pieris’s much loved masterpiece Nidhanaya.

He ventured into directing with a screen adaptation of Gunadasa Amarasekara’s novel Karumakkarayo. His film Viragaya remains one of the greatest Sinhala movies of all time.

Mr. Abeysekara was 69 years old at the time of his death.
