Suspects but no arrests

Killing of JVP activist
By Leon Berenger

Police investigating last week's killing of a JVP activist in Veyangoda have made no arrests so far, although prime suspects identified by eyewitnesses have been seen at election meetings over the past several days.

Nandana Balage

Well-known JVP activist Nandana Balage was shot dead and a JVP colleague wounded in an attack that took place after a campaign meeting. “The police are on the look-out for these suspects,” Senior DIG K. P. Pathirana told The Sunday Times.

“The case has gone up to the Attorney-General’s De-partment for further action." Mr. Pathirana said so far only one of the five suspects had responded to a police request to turn up at a police station and give a statement.

Piyasiri Wijeynayake, an MP for the pro-government National Freedom Front (NFF), appeared at the area police station 11 days after the incident. He surrendered his pistol and ammunition and made a statement to the police.

The MP is alleged to have been present at the time of the incident, and the vehicle he was travelling in was seized by the Veyangoda police.

Meanwhile, another suspect was spotted yesterday at a political propaganda meeting at Kirindiwella. He was seen in the company of several police officers. “It is clear the police are under immense pressure not to be helpful in this matter,” JVP Gampaha district group leader Waruna Rajapakse said.

“The suspects are free to do as they like. They are even taking part in the polls campaigns.”
