The irony is that you cannot bring them on to your living room and sit on your favourite lounge, relax and listen. But, if you dig the sounds of Rod Stewart you must make an appointment in your diary to keep a date free. No counterfeiting. They sound almost authentic.
Now the ‘Wildfire’ has just been doused, husky voiced Fabion Bonnie Paul is on the high road again with his own outfit “Crossroads” – doing the best thing that he can do. He sings Rod Stewart for the people.
Crossroads comprises Bonnie at lead vocals, ‘Malla’ (Pethum Fernando – baas and lead), Nalaka Jayasinghe (lead guitar), Kanchana Jayasinghe (keyboard and baas) and Chamal (H.A. Vijitha Pushpakumara – drums).
Bonnie says “I got my initial training as a singer with our church choir at St. Thomas’ Church Kotte and I seriously thought of singing for my supper at the age of twenty. At the beginning I sang with various outfits until someone discovered that I sounded good with Rod Stewart and then while at Nuwara Eliya I met Derek Wickremanayake and the Wildfire from that point onwards things began to fall into its correct perspective.”
Bonnie continued “I always wanted my own band. Then when Derek decided to douse Wildfire, I got this line up working and here we go.
“Besides this I would like if my band gets an opportunity to perform outside Sri Lanka, so that we could tighten up whatever loose ends we have and we are working hard to make that a reality.”
Finally Bonnie quipped “Besides Rod Stewart, in our music line up we have Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, Journey, Eagles, Deep Purple and CCR. But, also we do some other pop stuff too.”
