Prasanna Vithanage’s latest film “Akasa Kusum” (Flowers of the Sky) was recently picked up by American distributor for the sales rights.
Wonderphil Productions, an independent US-based film distribution company signed an agreement with Sarasavi Cineru for the world sales distribution rights for the film.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan film has been picked by an American company for distribution. Under the contract, Wonderphil Productions will hold the rights to distribute “Akasa Kusum” in cinemas, DVD, television and other formats across the globe except in India and Sri Lanka. The California-based company signed the agreement with Sarasavi Cineru on April 14.
The film, which won Malini Fonseka the coveted Silver Peacock Award at the 39 Indian International Film Festival in Goa, will be released in Sri Lankan theatres in July 2009. “Akasa Kusum” also won a Jury Special Mention at the Vesoul International Film Festival in France and is currently being exhibited in the world festival circuit.
Co-produced by H. D. Premasiri for Sarasavi Cineru and A. Sreekar Prasad for Film Freaks India, “Akasa Kusum” stars Malini Fonseka, Nimmi Harasgama, Dilhani Ekanayake, Kaushalya Fernando, Samanalee Fonseka and Jayani Senanayake.
