Facebook goes mobile !

Tech Talk with Devaka

This just might be the 3rd or 4th article I’m writing about Facebook. Just that Facebook to me, is incredibly interesting beyond the fact that it’s a super cool social platform. Since of late, I’ve noticed that I have started to use my mobile phone to login to Facebook more often than I used to.

The obvious reason is that the phone comes with a pre-built Facebook application which makes it very easy for me to access it as long as I have a decent signal. This is what Facebook is eyeing these days. To go mobile!

Facebook strategists see the potential for growth in the mobile sector, having noted as much as 13% of their users log in from their phones. To some that number would have the appearance of success, but Facebook sees nowhere to go but up. They’ve begun talks with pretty much everyone in the business, and are hoping to bring more Facebook to more handsets, including Palm’s much-anticipated Pre and hopefully a whole bunch of Nokias.

At over 220 million users, Facebook’s growth may be starting to slow down in the traditional browser-based arena, but a couple of mobile clients included on major phones and backed by the likes of Nokia would be a huge boost to that number.

Facebook has still not made any official news on their alliances with vendors who will bring this new platform to life. But it wouldn’t surprise to me to see all the major vendors both in the mobile technology and software space getting involved. The move has already begun with applications currently being built for the iPhone, Palm, Blackberry, Sony Ericsson and the most recent addition Windows Mobile. More information about Facebook Mobile is available online at http://www.facebook.com/mobile.

According to the latest from Microsoft, mobile-phone users with Microsoft Windows Mobile devices and who have a Facebook account can keep up with what their friends are doing, thanks to a new Microsoft application. The software giant made Facebook for Windows Mobile available for download on its Web site.

Users of Windows Mobile 6.0 or higher can use the Facebook application to call or send messages to any of the people on their friends list, take photos and videos, then upload them to Facebook and manage their profile.

GAME CORNER

I started playing Playstation 2 version of the hottest movie in Colombo these days, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. First off, you should definitely “not” play this until you watch the movie. The storyline of it is pretty much the same as the movie and it will surely kill the thrill of watching it for the first time.

The gameplay is much like the character of wolverine, where there is no puzzle solving and just brutal attacking from start to finish! The major drawback that I saw was the awkward camera angles you will get from time to time and not having any control of it.

There are times when the player is completely blindsided from all corners not being able to see any advancing enemies. So you have very little time to prepare for an attack. Overall I’ll give it a 6 out of 10.
