New solutions to buying water, plastic bottle pollution

Safe drinking water has become a major problem in the world and though bottled drinking water has partly solved this problem it has created other issues like paying for water and environmental problems.
In this regard, Neeraj Jain, Regional Retail Head Asia, Vestergaard Frandsen India (Pvt) Ltd told the Sunday Times FT that the LifeStraw water purifier that they have introduced to the market could minimise some of these issues.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a Colombo briefing last week to announce the launch of three new products, PermaNet – a medicated mosquito net – LifeStraw and LifeStraw Family - two water purifiers – and the distribution of these products is done by Rainco (Pvt) Ltd, market leader in umbrellas, mosquito nets and raincoats in Sri Lanka.

These products are manufactured by Vestergaard Frandsen, a Swiss company known for its technologically innovative products that prevent transmission of diseases. Officials said PermaNet is insecticide treated [LLIN] mosquito bed nets and curtains. LifeStaw water purifiers, meet the US Environment Protection Standards for microbiological water filters and is designed to provide clean and safe drinking water. They remove more than 99 % of waterborne viruses and bacteria.

Fazal Fausz, Managing Director, Rainco said that the increasing incidence of mosquito borne diseases had led them to introduce this product to the Sri Lankan consumer. He said that WHO has recommended these nets to Sri Lanka and for the last two years they were negotiating to get the Ministry of Health approval.

He said that their industry of umbrella-making is not only an innovative business but it also contributes to the local economy. There are 650 full time workers while more than 250 people work in their homes, he said adding that this informal workforce is seen increasing.
