Prasanna Vithanage’s ‘Akasa Kusum’ (Flowers of the Sky) won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the third Cines del Sur Festival in Grana Spain.

Beating films from countries like India, China, Korea, the Palestine, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Iraq, “Akasa Kusum” shared the award with “Before the Burial,” by Iranian director Behnam Behzadi.
The film which scheduled to be released in Sri Lanka in late July has already won Malini Fonseka the Silver Peacock Award at the Indian International Film Festival held in Goa, for her performance as Sandhya Rani. “Akasa Kusum” also won a Special Jury Mention at the Vesoul Film Festival in France and has received rave reviews in the world film festival circuit.
The film a Sri Lankan-Indian co-production tells the story of faded actress Sandhya Rani (played by Malini Fonseka), who is suddenly thrust into the media spotlight when she is embroiled in a minor scandal.
Produced by H. D. Premasiri for Sarasavi Cineru and A. Sreekar Prasad for Film Freaks, the film stars Malini Fonseka, Nimmi Harasgama, Dilhani Ekanayake, Samanalee Fonseka, Kaushalya Fernando and Jayani Senanayake.
‘Akasa Kusum’ was recently picked up by Wonderphil Productions, an independent US-based film distribution company for the world sales distribution rights of the film. |
