Royal unbeaten all the way
- Royal 49 - St. Joseph’s 7

By Shamil Amit
The Royal rugby machine got their act together in the most telling way at the Royal Complex yesterday to drub St. Joseph’s by 49 points (seven goals) to 7 (1 goal) in the A Division Inter-School rugby game and shot into the top slot in schools rugby this year.

It had been a grand season for Royal led by that effervescent fly half Naren Dhason. They were unbeaten throughout the season and regained the prized Bradby Shield with convincing wins over Trinity and also bagged the Gunaratne Trophy with a fine win over S. Thomas’ in their first schools rugby game played this season.

St, Joseph’s who caused the biggest upset of the season when they beat Trinity at Bogambara were all at sea against the marauding blue and gold ruggerites.

Royal scored in the 17th minute when centre Duminda Attygalle sliced his way like a hot knife through butter and Muhsin Falil was on target to give them a 7-0 lead.

Royal came in for some opposition from the Josephians at this stage the blue and white jersey Darley Road lads kept them in check…but not for long. Hasthika Bandaranayake scored next and Muhsin Falil converted to put the Royalists ahead further, Just before the breather Chamara Dabare scored a neat try which he himself converted to give Royal an unassaiable 21-0 lead at the breather.

Royal continued their battering after the restart when Hasthika Bandaranayake scored in the 10th minute of the second half and ‘Mr. Reliable’ Muhsin Falil converted. Tries followed in amazing fashion through Hasthika Bandaranayake and replacement centre Chilanka Samaraweera and Royal were really on top.

The Joes could only look on aghast at the amazing Royal play. Their answer to all this was a consolation try by Priyan Perera which was goaled by Mayura Sanjeeva.

It had been an amazing season for Royal and we in the press box could look on happily as the Royalists young and old danced their way out of the packed stadium.
