The dejected Sri Lankan Beach Volleyball players after they were beaten by Kazakhstan team at Sentosa Island yesterday. |
Sri Lanka gave a gallant fight back in the second set but just could not get ahead of the opponents and were knocked-out in the quarter-final. The final scores were 17-21, 23-25,
The tearful duo Jeewantha Fernando and Sandun Fernando left the court in sadness as they knew that they were doing well in the tournament by being unbeaten up to that time. One loss and they were knocked out unable to make amends again.
Coach Sajith Nandasiri said that they were not their usual self today and they just could not play their normal game.
“They just could not concentrate too well and the opponents had studied our players before coming in to this game,” noted Nandasiri.
Table Tennis
Sri Lankan peddlers fell out in the second round in the singles events for boys and girls. This was not before Hasintha Shashiranga played an impressive game to beat his opponent from Mongolia in straight sets.
He played very impressively and gave away very little points to his opponent. However, he lost the second round to his opponent from Chinese Taipei.
Imantha Udayanga too played to win his first game against his opponent from Nepal but the game went to five sets. He lost the second game to his opponent from Chinese Taipei in straight sets.
Navodya Sahabandu lost in the first round to Isabelle Li from Singapore in straight sets to be out of the tournament.
With this all Sri Lankan peddlers are out of the reckonning.
Swimming:
Heshan Unamboowe was a disappointment again but this time he failed to qualify to enter the final in the 50 metres free style event.
However, he managed to qualify for the semi-final when he finished third in the first heat. He finished the race in a time of 25.11 seconds.
In the semi-final Heshan finished in sixth place and failed to qualify for the final.
This means that Sri Lanka cannot hope for any more medals and finished in 18th position in the medals tally.
