The picture on the right shows the burial of the 68-year-old mother Kusumawathi Kuruppuarachchi, who was shot dead while on her way to a UNF election meeting in the Hambantota district was held on Friday. A large number of security personnel and Police were present while the media were prevented from taking pictures. These photographs of the funeral were taken with a hidden camera.

Frustrated Polls Chief says no more notes to IGP

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has told Police Chief Mahinda Balasuriya that he will not be sending any further communications asking him to ensure that the country’s election laws are upheld because of the continuing failure on the part of the police to do so.

Large-scale disruption of postal voting
Sections of public servants, security personnel and police were deprived of postal voting as their applications to vote did not reach the Elections Office in time, Elections Department officials disclosed raising fears in some quarters that those responsible might attempt to disrupt polling on election day (January 26).

Over 10,000 polling stations for the voters
Fourteen million voters, who are eligible to vote at the Presidential election, can go to their respective polling booths on Tuesday January 26 and cast their vote. Polling stations will open at 7 in the morning and are kept open till 4 in the afternoon for the voters to cast their ballot.
