M'tile
rugby 7s with a different flavour
This year's much look forward to M'tile rugby 'sevens' sponsored
by Dialog GSM is of a different flavour. Since its inception from
1966 (barring two years) it has gone from strength to strength.
This tournament
meant to promote rugby among the rank and file in the Private Sector
big or small has gained much popularity among the rank and file. This
year's 7s will be held on Oct. 18 and 19 at the CR&FC and at
the Royal College Sports Complex. The semis and the finals will
be confined to Longden Place (CR&FC) Sunday Oct. 19. Already
30 teams have confirmed their participation.
This was revealed
at a media briefing held on Oct. 8, at the CR & FC chaired by
Nishantha Wickremage, the President of the M'tile rugby section
in association with the Gen. Manager Sales and Marketing, Dialog
GSM Naushad Perera, Chirantha de Zoysa, Specialist Marketing/Communication
and other members of the M'tile rugby section.
The 'Sevens'
participants in the coming M'tile tournament are our corporate customers.
Dialog is happy to be with them for this great two-day happening.
It`s not confined to a selected few, but mass participation, Perera
added.
There is a
new format this year. In 8 groups played on a league basis. Dialog
trophies are on offer from Shield, Bowl, the Plate and the Cup championship.
The top 8 teams in the league will play in the quarters. The winners
will play in the Cup semis - the losers in the Plate semis. The
losers in the Plate quarters in the Bowl semis. The losers in the
Plate in the Shield semis. The draw will be held at the CR&FC
at 6 p.m. on Oct. 13.
There are three
newcomers for this year´s scrummage - Sommervilles Asian Alliance
and T.A. Logistics Brondix. More women's teams in the scrum for
this year's 7s. Probably five to six teams. The girls from Slimline,
Tri Star Apparel and Hatton National Bank are in the forefront.
Some of Sri Lanka's best 7s players will scrum down. -BW |
