Water
bills up
With mystery and controversy still swirling around reported plans
to privatise water resources, the charges for water are to be increased
from March 1.
Water
Supplies Deputy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said consumers using
more than 15 units of water would have to pay 100 percent more.
He said the move was aimed at reducing the losses of the Water Supply
Board and curbing the misuse of water. The deputy minister claimed
the hike would not affect most families as some 70 percent of households
consumed less than 15 units a month.
Mr.
Amaraweera claimed the cost of providing one unit of water was about
Rs. 12 but it was provided at Rs. 1.25. |
