Anura
faces party tsunami
By Ranjith Ananda Jayasinghe
The President has called for an explanation from
Tourism Minister Anura Bandaranaike over his post-tsunami conduct.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga, as party leader, in a confidential
document has called Mr. Bandaranaike to explain his delay in returning
to the country after the tsunami and also the reasons for his public
criticism of the 100 metre buffer zone, President's House sources
told our sister paper the Irida Lankadeepa. Mr. Bandaranaike who
was on a visit to the United States returned to the country 10 days
after the tsunami and has been asked to explain the negligence of
his ministerial duties during that period.
The
tourism sector was among the worst affected by the December 26 tsunami.
Mr. Bandaranaike on his return was critical of the government's
decision to impose a ban on the reconstruction of fully damaged
hotels within the 100 metre zone and canvassed for a change of the
decision by Cabinet. President Kumaratunga has given a 14-day period
for his explanation and after the response is received, he is expected
to face a disciplinary inquiry, sources said. The Sunday Times learns
that Mr. Bandaranaike is currently having legal consultations on
the matter. |
