Wheelchair
tennis youth programme launched
By Shamseer Jaleel
The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) officially
inaugurated a youth programme last week. As the success in Wheelchair
Tennis at international level has been good during the recent times,
most of the soldiers disabled in the 20 year Northeast war have
taken to it.
The
Olympics representatives Manathunge and Bertie gave the young lads
from the Sevana Lama Niwasa in Pitta Kotte the demonstration. Major
Shiram Abeysekera secretary of the Wheelchair tennis Committee speaking
to The Sunday Times said that "the rapid success of the soldiers
is excellent. They moved up the ladder from Grade D to grade A within
about two years. But at the level of Para Olympic the lack of a
healthy pedigree clearly proved detrimental".
The
young lads from Pita Kotte Orphanage will be given all the support
from coaches to courts, wheelchairs to racquets and even transport
to Green Path courts. This project is financed by South Asia Gateway
Terminal Fund for the development of Wheelchair tennis. |
